Special Education Consultant Services

The purpose of the Special Education consultants of the Northwest AEA is to facilitate the development of successful strategies and interventions for school aged students (K - 12) using a positive problem-solving process with parents, teachers, other staff and students in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Special Education consultants provide services to kindergarten through school-aged students. The consultant staff serves both general education and special education students and has diverse expertise in classroom teaching. The types of services Special Education consultants offer to local district teachers, administrators, parents and students include:

  • behavior interventions
  • classroom management
  • curriculum
    • adaptation
    • development
    • modification
    • accommodations
  • instructional
    • interventions
    • procedures
    • strategies/techniques
  • monitoring student programs
  • staff development

Special Education consultants serve as a member of each building team, facilitating the planning of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and ensuring educational growth. They are or have been involved in the following projects:

  • collaborative teaching initiative
  • differentiated instruction (DI)
  • AEA math team/ Every Student Counts
  • Improving Student Achievement Through the IEP Process (Training to AEA & LEA)
  • Mandt training
  • KU Learning Strategies
  • AEA reading team
  • structured teaching (Autism)

    • curriculum-based assessment
    • study skills
    • Instructional Decision Making (IDM)/Response to Intervention (RTI)
