Special Education

The division of Special Education has the two major responsibilities of child find/identification of children with disabilities and providing support and related services to those identified children. Services are provided for children birth through the age of 21 and can be accessed through requests made by parents or school personnel. For general information, contact the Special Education Division at 712-222-6010 or 1-800-352-9040, ext. 6010.

The philosophy for Special Education is based on the Instructional Decision Making (IDM) and Response to Intervention (RTI) model. They are essentially two sides of the same coin. Based on the use of evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies matched to individual student needs and frequent monitoring of student progress, the approach uses a three-tiered structure of increasing instructional intensity to make decisions about a student's educational program, including whether or not the student is eligible for special education services.
